ACETANILID (Phenylacetamide; Antifebrin.)
Analgesic, antipyretic, antiseptic; a powerful depressant to the spinal nerve centers. Used especially in neuralgic and rheumatic affections to control pain. in migraine, in febrile conditions accom panied with pain. in delirium tremens, in insomnia and as a remedy for obstinate vomiting. Externally it is useful as a surgical dress ing, resembling iodoform in its action. Incompatible with bromides and iodides and with spirit of nitrous ether. It is advantageously combined with Caffeine which dim⁴

ACID BORIC (Boracic Acid)
Antiseptic, yet non-irritant and not poisonous. Used largely in powder or glycerite as antiseptic dressing for wounds and ulcers; solutions are employed as collyria and for local use in nasal catarrh, ozena, cystitis, gonorrhea and various cutaneous diseases. Internal ly it is prescribed to render the urine acid in cystitis and as a remedy in fermentative dyspepsia. Dose, 0.3 to 1.0 Grm. (5 to 15 grs.).⁴

ACID CARBOLIC (Phenol)
A powerful antiseptic and germicide, also an energetic and rapid poison; used internally as an anti-emetic and a gastric and in testinal antiseptic. Locally it acts as an anesthetic and cauterant. The liquified acid is applied in full strength to cauterize or thoroughly cleanse infected wounds, followed by strongalcohol to neu tralize its devitalizing effects. Carbolated oil (10 grs. to the ounce) or a carbolated ointment of similar strength, is one of the best dress ings for burns, scalds and i⁴

ACID GALLIC
Astringent but not locally hemostatic, Prescribed in diarrheas, in atonic albuminuria, in hematuria, colliquative sweats, diabetes insipidus (combined with opium) and in internal hemorrhages. Ap plied locally in ointments in hemorrhoids and for unhealthy ulcers. Dose, 0.2 to 1.0 Grm. (3 to 15 grs.)⁴

ACID LACTIC
Classed as tonic and astringent. Used in some forms of gas tric and intestinal indigestion and for relief of diarrhea in children. Locally acts as a cauterant, and formerly much used in treatment of chancres, chancroids, phagedenic ulcers and gangrene. Dose of the official diluted acid (10%), 0.6 to 1.6 c. c. (10 to 25 M).⁴

ACID SALICYLIC and SALICYLATES
a. Salicyi iC Acid . An energetic antiseptic with comparatively little poisonous action; inhibits fermentation; used chiefi y in rheuma tism, the free acid acting more powerfully than its salts (e. g. sodium salicylate) but more liable to cause gastric irritation. Dose (in rheu matism) 0.6 to 1.3 Grm. (10 to 20 grs.) four to six times a day. b. Ammonium Salicylate. Properties of Salicylic Acid with some stimulating action. Dose, 0.3 to 1.3 Grm. (5 to 20 grs.). c. Lithium Salicylate. Combines the⁴

ACID TANNIC (Tannin)
Powerful astringent. Employed locally as a styptic; internally sometimes prescribed in diarrhea, but more commonly drugs rich in Tannin such as Blackberry or Rhatany are used. Dose, 0.12 to 0.6 Grm. (2 to 10 grs.). Ointment Tannic Acid, U. S. P., (87% grs. to the ounce). Used especially in hemorrhoids. Glycerite Tannic Acid, U. S. P. (87% grs. to the ounce). Used as application to throat in relaxed condition, also locally in chronic coryza and ozena, and in certain cutaneous diseases. as eczema,⁴

ACID VALERIANIC AND VALERIANATES
Compounds of Valerianic Acid produce a quieting effect in hysterical conditions and are prescribed usually with reference to that effect. The uncombined acid is never used. a. Ammonium Valerianate. This is the salt of Valerianic Acid most frequently prescribed. It is useful innervous headaches, hysteria and the nervousness connected with pregnancy or the meno pause. Very commonly combined with bromides. Dose, 0.12 to 0.6 (2 to 10 grs.). b. Ferric Valerianate. Prescribed commonly in combination w⁴

ACONITE
The tuber, also the leaves (unoflicial) of ACONITU M NAPELLUs, Lin. Actively poisonous. A powerful cardiac depressant acting thus as an arterial sedative; paralyzes sensory nerves and depresses respiratory centers. Used chiefly for its antipyretic effect and in treatment of neuralgia, rheumatism and cardiac hypertrophy; local ly, in liniments, for relief of pain. Dose, 0.015 to 0.12 Grm. (% to 2 grs.).⁴

ALKAL-ANTISEPTINE
A pleasantly aromatic liquid having an alkaline reaction and serving as an efficient antiseptic and germicide although not pois onous to the human subject. It differs from Antiseptine, q. v. in that it contains glycerin and is distinctly alkaline. Its chief active constituents are Thymol, Eucalyptol, Menthol, Sodium Borate and Sodium Benzoate. Internally it may be given in teaspoonful doses as a gastric and intestinal antiseptic with antacid properties, but it is much more commonly used locally ⁴

ACIDITY OF STOMACH
If due to fermentation, use antacids as palliatives to relieve im mediate distress, but prescribe also gastric antiseptics. Avoid indigestible food, particularly lats. If acidity is irom hyper-secretion, the remedies are antacids and henbane, for its inhibitive action on the secretions. In chronic gastric catarrh, bismuth. silver nitrate, antacids combined with salines. In all severe cases. lavage is the most useful treatment.⁴

ACNE
Ascertain whether constitutional disease or disordered dhrestion is present and modify treatment accordingly. Arsenic is generally indicated. especially in combination with iron. If there is active inflammation apply lotion of lead water. For dust ing powder zinc oleate, Iodosyl or zinc oxide.⁴

BED SORES
When threatened, harden skin by frequent use of astringent lotions, lead water, tannin dissolved in dilute alcohol, 2 grs. to fl. oz.; whiskey and salt (2 drachms to pint); Antiseptine diluted with wa ter or whiskey. When ulcers have formal, protect with soap plaster and use antiseptics. especially Iodosyl ointment. Sustain patient’s strength with nourishing and predigested food. Iron in form of the tincture is generally of service.⁴

BITES AND STINGS OF INSECTS
Alkaline lotions give relief; use a weak solution of ammonia. Alkal-amiseptine, diluted with an equal volume of water, sodium bicarbonate (10 grs. to the 11. oz.), sodium borate (10 to 20 grs. to fl oz.); carbolated oil or ointment also has a soothing effect.⁴

BLEPHARITIS
Remove crusts by careful use of a solution of sodium borate (8 grs. to fl. oz.), then apply Iodosyl ointment (6 per cent.) or a dilute oint ment of yellow oxide of mercury (1 gr. to drm.) or an ointment con taining in each drachm 2 grs. of precipitated sulphur and 1.5 grs. of resorcin. For accompanying conjunctivitis, eye drops containing boric acid or sodium borate. Correct refractive errors if present.⁴
